Moringa Connect and the Akaa Project’s partnership began last January when the Moringa Connect team trained and educated the Akaa community on the power of Moringa. Over the coming months, we will continue to work closely with Moringa Connect on effective Moringa farming and setting up cooperatives so the Akaa community can sell their seeds and provide income for the community school.

Moringa Connect is a social enterprise that helps farmers increase their income and improve the health of their families. They work with small farmers throughout Ghana, purchase Moringa seeds, press the seeds into oil and then sell the oil globally – they are serving as the missing link to getting small farmers access to the larger global market.

Moringa is a highly nutritious tree that has numerous medicinal, preventative and nourishing benefits. It can grow in drought, many of which are in areas where malnutrition is high. One of the most unique characteristics of Moringa is that it is both a food and cash crop. The leaves can be used for eating, improving families’ health, and now with Moringa Connect, the seeds can be sold, increasing their income. Consider other crops such as maize or cassava. These crops can be used either to consume or sell – but not both. For farmers like those in the Akaa community, the ability to produce both food and cash crops is particularly important as it supplements nutrition with an economic component.

In January, the Moringa Connect team visited the Akaa community to train and educate on how to grow Moringa, as well as its many uses and benefits. The team also helped us plant nurseries of Moringa trees which today are now in the ground and growing quickly! This rainy season, we will start a larger school Moringa farm, as part of our investment in community ventures to support the school.  Individuals from the community will also start to intercrop Moringa alongside their current cassava, coco yam and tomato, which will mitigate risk of starting their Moringa growth and improve the growth of their other crops.

These seeds will then become part of Moringa Connect’s retail line of Moringa oil. The recent launch completes the last step in the supply chain process – connecting consumers directly to the source and driving more value back to smallholder farmers. Moringa Connect is connecting farmers to the miraculous Moringa tree and now you to its beautifying oil!

Produced in Ghana, use moringa oil as a moisturizing serum: 2-3 drops per day, rub into hands and massage into damp hair or apply under the eyes or on the face. The oil has anti-aging properties, is rich in anti-oxidants and rejuvenates hair and skin.

Use the coupon code “donateakaa” at checkout and Moringa Connect will donate $5 to the Akaa Project for every bottle purchased. What are you waiting for? Join the Moringa movement!
