The Akaa Project is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that works with the rural community of Akaa in the Eastern Region of Ghana on education, healthcare and finance. While we have had volunteers since 2009, our first large group came in January for 2 weeks. We had our second College of Wooster group trip this summer, starting May 23 and ending on June 6.

Every time we have volunteers, the experience is never the same. There are different highlights, different activities and different personalities that all make the trip unique to each group. Our 9 Wooster student volunteers left on Wednesday night after their two week experience in Ghana. While starting the trip off with a sickness that forced them to return from the village to Accra to get better, the volunteers made their time in the village “epic” (one of the common words throughout their time here).

Something that I thought was pretty special about this volunteer group was their friendliness and desire to get to know everyone in the  community. While many volunteers find connections with most often with the children, this group expanded to the elders and anyone who would stop by the community.

We are so thankful to all those volunteers that spent 2 weeks with us and hope you will come back again!
